The First Holy Communion is a significant religious event within the Roman Catholic Tradition. It's something that my sister and I have taken part in, along with generations of my family. This project uses archive imagery from my first communion as well as three generations of my family, from my mum's, grandmothers, aunties and cousins. The white veil, rich in symbolism, white associated with purity, a feminine emblem of modesty. Through this project I am interested in Catholic rituals, traditions and in particular uncovering the meaning behind the traditional clothing that women in particular have to wear. The first communion is often preceded by months of religious education and preparation, both in school and through church activities. Children learn about the significance of the Eucharist, the Mass, and the importance of confession, which usually happens before receiving their First Communion.
